Rebuilding Sussex Heights Primary School

March 2011
The Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution (BER) program is providing new and improved facilities at each of our local schools.
Recently I had the pleasure of opening Sussex Heights Primary School’s new multipurpose centre, which provides a new indoor space which can accommodate whole school assemblies, performances, music classes, play groups and Out of School Hours Care.
Some external users also make use of the facilities, including a Karate group (GKR Karate), and local community-based groups who require a meeting space.
After a fire in 2008, Sussex Heights has undertaken significant work to upgrade and rebuild its facilities. This BER project adds an extra dimension to the school, offering terrific facilities for the students and the school community.
Celebrating Chinese New Year

February 2011
I have had the joy of celebrating Chinese New Year with varied groups from the local Chinese community.
The last census in 2006 found that six percent of my electorate’s population listed China as their country of birth.
This Chinese New Year festival is, of course, the highlight of the Chinese calendar and a special occasion for families to gather and celebrate their heritage and culture.
It is equally a precious opportunity for the wider community to recognise the enormous part that Chinese Australians have played in our national story for more than 150 years.
I celebrated with the Cantonese-speaking part of my electorate in Box Hill; with the Taiwanese group in Box Hill; and with the predominantly Mandarin-speaking part in Mount Waverley.
Christmas card competition

December 2010
Recently I invited local disability organisations to exhibit their artistic flair by creating designs for a Christmas card to be delivered to every household in the Chisholm electorate.
I had the pleasure of visiting the Oakleigh Centre to personally congratulate Alan Silcock, whose design was chosen as the winning entry.
The Oakleigh Centre is a fantastic local organisation that provides a range of specialised and innovative support services which enhance the quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Congratulations to Alan and the Oakleigh Centre for their wonderful work.
Wembley Park Upgrade

November 2010
I’m delighted Whitehorse is now home to a first-class soccer facility following the opening of the redeveloped Wembley Park Sports Precinct.
With the growth of soccer in the eastern suburbs, this project was essential to provide a modern soccer facility for future development of junior soccer in the community.
The redevelopment includes a range of facilities such as a multi-purpose room, referees’ change room, storage areas, new toilets, a new roof, new signage and fencing.
The Federal Labor Government contributed $2.3 million to the project through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.
This program has supported thousands of jobs around the country through the building of great community facilities like those at Wembley Park.
New Green Skills Hub Opened at Box Hill TAFE

November 2010
I had the pleasure of opening the new $2.8 million Green Trade Skills Hub at Box Hill TAFE, which was funded by the Federal Labor Government.
The project involved construction of a new solar energy rooftop generation system and solar training facility, a new rainwater harvesting system and a green plumbing training facility.
Box Hill TAFE is one of the leading TAFEs in Australia and is perfectly positioned to facilitate this training.
Caroline Chisholm Awards

August 2010
I recently held the 9th annual Caroline Chisholm awards, a ceremony which recognises the outstanding contributions made by volunteers in the Chisholm community.
Local residents were invited to nominate volunteers living or performing volunteer work in the Chisholm electorate. Nominees were then assessed by a selection panel, with the successful nominees invited to attend an awards ceremony held at Sussex Heights Primary School.
Volunteers often perform thankless tasks so it’s important for the community to recognise the fantastic contributions they make to society.
Caroline Chisholm (1808) – 1877) was known for her volunteer work assisting newly-arrived migrants in Australia in the 19th century. The Federal electorate of Chisholm is named after her.
Congratulations to the 2010 recipients of the Caroline Chisholm Award:
