Fixing Ted Baillieu's Health Cuts with $8.4 Million to Eastern HealthPosted February 21, 2013
The Federal Government will provide $8.4 million directly to Southern Health to fix Ted Baillieu's savage health cuts, Anna Burke said today.
"One of the great disappointments for our community since the election of the Baillieu Government has been its consistent failure on health, with growing waiting lists, lengthy waiting times for ambulance call outs and savage cuts," Ms Burke said.
"There are currently 46,000 Victorians waiting in a slow moving queue because the Premier is incapable of running Victoria's health care system and Victorians have been subjected to a nasty political blame game.
"I'm pleased to announce that the Federal Government will immediately provide $8.4 million directly to Eastern Health to ensure beds are reopened at Box Hill Hospital.
"But the $616 million that Ted Baillieu has cut from the Victorian health budget is having a devastating effect on hospital services and public surgery waiting lists, this needs to be fixed and funding restored now," Ms Burke said.
"I call on the Premier to immediately restore the $616 million worth of cuts he has inflicted upon Victorians - which means providing $47.6 million to Eastern Health."
"Only by restoring this funding can patients have the confidence that they will get the surgeries they need under the Victorian Liberal Government," Ms Burke said.
The Federal Government has provided this funding for Southern Health as part of $106.9 million for Victoria's health system in the face of the Baillieu Government's incompetence and mismanagement.
The funding is on top of the $3.6 billion in Federal funding for Victoria's health system in the current financial year, a figure that will rise by over $900 million to $4.5 billion in 2015-16.
